Sizing Crack Indications From Ultrasonic ILI: Challenges And Options
NDT Global's Principal ILI Technology Consultant Herbert Willems presented this paper on "Sizing Crack Indications from Ultrasonic ILI: Challenges and Options" at the 2017 Pipeline Technology Conference (PTC) in Berlin, Germany. The paper's objective is to outline to those who use ultrasonic ILI tools the potential and limits of crack sizing when using amplified-based inspection technologies, on a physical basis.
Also examined is the influence of a variety of variables (crack depth, inspection angle, tilt angle, skew angle etc.) on the reflection signal, by using experimental results as well as modelling results. The paper discusses options that have the potential to improve depth sizing for ultrasonic ILI moving forward.
