Q: Can you tell us about your professional journey and what led you to your current VP, Sales Operations role?
A: My professional journey began at 18 when I secured my first job as a marketing executive. Coming from a background of part-time tutoring and teaching swimming to four-year-olds, I had little knowledge of the corporate world. However, I was given the opportunity to lead a sales assistant team and launch a membership club for kids. This experience uncovered my passion and talent for sales and marketing.
After two years, I decided to pursue a law degree while taking on various part-time roles—concierge, rave party coordinator, and even an artist "babysitter" for advertisement shoots! But when an opportunity arose at AGR Malaysia, I couldn’t resist. I took on a full-time role while completing my degree part-time.
My career in the oil and gas industry began as a personal assistant, but I quickly progressed to the global sales team as a marketing coordinator. When AGR was acquired by Oceaneering, I was fortunate to be transferred to Norway, where I took on a project controller role, primarily focusing on integrating AGR into Oceaneering’s processes and systems. Later, I transitioned into a sales manager role for the Asset Integrity department.
These experiences - working with global teams and leading integration efforts - laid the foundation for my journey with the Previan group. From establishing processes and systems at Halfwave to TSC Subsea and now as VP of Sales Operations at NDT Global, it has been a challenging, exciting, and rewarding adventure.
Q: Looking back, what do you think were the key moments or decisions that shaped your career path?
A: Key moments in my career include the move to Norway, which provided a supportive and strong equality environment for career advancement, and the mentorship I received from experienced professionals. These experiences, along with the opportunities to lead and demonstrate my capabilities, have been pivotal in shaping my career.
Q: What qualities do you value most in the people you lead?
A: I value solution-oriented individuals who are proactive, take initiative, and dare to be different. I appreciate those who can engage in constructive debates, think outside the box, and work collaboratively to find the best solutions. Time is precious to everyone, so I value quick issue resolution and concise communication.
Q: What advice would you give to someone aspiring to take on a leadership role in the future?
A: The mentor who brought me from Malaysia to Norway gave me invaluable advice that I carry with me:" Always come with solutions, not just problems. This mindset determines whether you are an asset to the company or just a complainer."
Always give your best effort, stay open to learning from anyone, and relentlessly pursue growth. Be a solution-driven thinker—welcome input from others, but make objective decisions, even when they’re unpopular. Stand by the choices you believe are best for the company, take ownership of your mistakes, and use them as lessons to improve. True leadership lies in accountability, resilience, and the courage to make tough calls.
At the end of the day, it shouldn’t matter what race, gender, or age you are. If you give your best, the right company will recognize and reward you. If they don’t, you can move forward with no regrets, knowing that you’ll find a place that truly values your contributions. Never let anyone limit your ability to shine.
Most importantly, inspire those around you to work alongside you toward a common goal. Great achievements are never made alone—teamwork makes the dream work.
Q: What’s one thing people may not know about you that has shaped your life or career?
A: As a teenager, my brother and I strived to be financially independent to avoid burdening our parents. This instilled in me a strong sense of responsibility, the importance of planning ahead, and the value of hard work. These qualities have been instrumental in shaping my career and helping me achieve my goals.
