guided wave ultrasonic testing (GWUT)

A non-destructive testing (NDT) technique for detecting anomalies in a pipeline that involves introducing mechanical stress waves that propagate axially from a circumferential array of low-frequency (LF) transducers placed around the pipeline at a fixed location.

NOTE The wall thickness of the pipe serves as a wave guide, and the locations of anomalies are established by the timing of the arrival of a wave reflected from the anomaly back to the location of the emitting device.
