The Canadian Standards Association standard CSA Z662:23, published in June 2023, establishes guidelines for safety measures and acceptance criteria for gas pipelines. Annex B of the standard outlines quantitative thresholds for both Individual Risk (IR) and Societal Risk (SR).
While Annex B is presented as informative guidance, pipeline operators have increasingly adopted structured methodologies to evaluate safety performance and demonstrate compliance with IR and SR criteria.
This article introduces a quantitative framework for assessing both individual and societal risk in gas pipeline systems, aligned with the principles and guidance set forth in CSA Z662:23 Annex B.
